چکیده

I . The intake and excretion of total nitrogen, fat and the various forms of carbohydrate, and the heats of combustion of the diet, urine and faeces were measured in groups of young men, young women, elderly men and elderly women. 2. Each group was studied while the subjects were eating two diets in turn, which differed in their contents of unavailable carbohydrate; the young women were also studied on a third diet which was rich in unavailable carbohydrate. 3. Increasing the intake of unavailable carbohydrate resulted in a greater faecal loss of energy, and in most instances of nitrogen and fat. 4. There was no significant effect of sex or age on the apparent digestibility of protein, fat or available carbohydrate. 5. The results are used to evaluate the use of calorie conversion factors for calculating the metabolizable energy content of mixed diets. 6. These show that for practical purposes the classical Atwater factors can be used to calculate the metabolizable energy of a diet with reasonable accuracy, provided that when available carbohydrate (as monosaccharides) values are used in the calculation a factor of 3.75 kcal/g (15.7 kJ/g) is used. 7. The studies demonstrate that the accuracy of any method for calculating the metabolizable energy of a diet is largely determined by the accuracy with which the method is capable of predicting the gross energy of the diet.

Comparison of Effects of High-Fat, High-Protein and Low-Calorie Diets on Klotho Gene Expression and TGF-β Level in Serum and Liver of Old Male Wistar Rats

Background and Objectives: Different diets have important roles in human health and aging. In the current study, we aimed to characterize the Klotho, an anti-aging protein, gene expression and protein level in the serum and assess the protein levels of Transforming growth factor-β and Platelet-derived growth factor in old rats which treated with different diets (high-fat, high-protein, low calo...

The Effect of Running on a Treadmill and Low Calorie Diet on Visfatin and hs-CRP Values in People with Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

Background & objectives:  with Regard to the increasing prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), focusing on various strategies for its prevention and management seem necessary. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of running on treadmill and low calorie diet on visfatin and hs-CRP values in people with NAFLD. Methods: In this quasi-experimental Study, 55 NAF...

Contributing Factors to BMI Decrease in Women undergoing Weight Loss Program

Background & Aims: One of the problems hindering people’s success in losing weight is their lack of knowledge about the limitations they face. The aim of this research was to investigate the contributing factors to BMI decrease in women referring to the clinic for weight reduction programs. Method: In this cross-sectional study, the medical files of 100 women (18-65 years old) with BMI>23, bein...

Material-specific Conversion Factors for Different Solid Phantoms Used in the Dosimetry of Different Brachytherapy Sources

Introduction Based on Task Group No. 43 (TG-43U1) recommendations, water phantom is proposed as a reference phantom for the dosimetry of brachytherapy sources. The experimental determination of TG-43 parameters is usually performed in water-equivalent solid phantoms. The purpose of this study was to determine the conversion factors for equalizing solid phantoms to water. Materials and Methods T...

The Effects of Fermacto, Bactocell and Biostrong in Antibiotic-free Diets on the Performance of Broilers

The aim of this study was to compare the effects of three antibiotic alternatives with a control (Antibiotic-free) and an antibiotic diet on performance and gut morphology of broilers reared on litter. 600 day-old ROSS-308 chicks were assigned to 48 pens in a CRD design with 6 × 2 factorial arrangements, in which 2 levels of chick density (5 and 7.5 chicks/m2) and 6 experimental diets (control,...
